<image:caption>In July 2014, while my wife Judi and I were visiting my father-in-law Steve Yahner (now deceased) in Patton PA, he had mentioned that they (Yahner Farms) were out and about at several locations harvesting with the combines. We insisted to go see and drove outside of town and found our cousin Rick Yahner running the combine. Just as a note, I had known Rick even prior to getting married to Judi from my wrestling days in high school and I wrestled with his brothers Rob and Dave at UPJ. Anyways, we stopped and got out to take a picture. He (Rick) saw me and stopped and insisted that I jump in and ride with him in the combine. By luck or destiny, it just so happened that a reporter from the the Altoona Mirror newspaper at that very moment was driving an Route 36 and stopped to take a picture of us. It was the front page headline in the Altoona Mirror Saturday edition the next day. It was a real special moment for me for some reason as it “combined” my life all together as one - agriculture, Cambria County, being married, my wife’s family, my father-in-law, my family, my wife, Pennsylvania, Virginia, thoughts of conservation and nonpoint source pollution, thoughts of my work with the Envirothon team in Virginia, thoughts of the Yahner family legacy, and thoughts of wrestling. I was so proud plus it was really, really cool riding in the combine on such a beautiful summer day!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Similar to the above photograph, here is another older vintage view of the Cambria City, Minersville section of the City of Johnstown as taken from the toe of the Brownstown hillside. The Bethlehem Steel Corporation Rosedale coke plant in the Hinckston Run stream valley can be seen in the back far right corner (north part) of the photograph. <image:title>Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>From the opposite perspective of the above two photographs, this is a picture I took of the city with my own Polaroid camera just after the July 20, 1977 flood from the “Knob”. The “Knob” was a high topography area just to the north of the Minersville section of the City of Johnstown and the Conemaugh River. Note again not many trees at the time. The “Knob” was situated just southwest of where our house was in the Benshoff Hill/Valley View section of southern Middle Taylor Township. I spent a lot of time in my youth adventuring at this spot which was close to our house. It was really neat to watch the trains go across the historic Stone Bridge from this vantage point.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Family photograph capture from our family home movies, Super 8mm Bell & Howell. The capture is from an actual 23 second video clip from our family home movies which is provided below. It was taken from my Grandpap Joseph Thomas’ house on the “Hill” in the Benshoff Hill/Valley View section of south Middle Taylor Township now Taft Street. His house was located just to the northwest and uphill from the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC) Rosedale coke plant complex on Honan Avenue in the Hinckston Run stream valley. You can see the plume of smoke from active coke plant operations in the background. The date is from around 1970 and this is my Aunt Pat (Thomas) Furman in the photo. She is now deceased.</image:caption>

<image:title>Introduction 2</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a telling aerial image (USGS 1977). You can see the Conemaugh River and the 4th Avenue Bridge in the Cambria City, Minersville section of the City of Johnstown in the lower (southwest) corner. Just to the right (northeast) you can see the Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC) Rosedale coke plant situated along the meandering Hinckston Run stream. If you look real, real close you can actually see in the image what I believe is a plume of smoke coming from the former smokestack at the coke plant. It is the white cloud in a J-hook arrangement and is probably a rising plume which then makes a hard left turn once it hits prevailing winds at a higher elevation. This plume is right over our house where we used to live in the Benshoff Hill/Valley View section of southern Middle Taylor Township.</image:caption>

<image:title>Introduction 2 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is another great historical aerial image, appears to be from airplane (source and date unknown). You can see in the middle left (west) of the picture where the smoke is pouring out heavily the Johnstown Plant Bethlehem Steel in operation in Cambria City. You can see the Johnstown train station and the bridge over the Little Conemaugh River at the base of Prospect Hill. The point of interest I would like to make is the other plant smoking away in the background beyond (north of) the large plant. This is the Rosedale coke plant. It is around the hill in the next valley which would be Hinckston Run.</image:caption>

<image:title>Introduction 2 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is an example of the smoke and steam plume which rose most all of the time as I remember from the Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC) Rosedale coke plant situated along Honan Avenue and the Hinckston Run stream. <image:caption>This is just an amazing photograph of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation Rosedale coke plant pretty much as I remember it from my youth. Again, notice the double smokestack on the right (east) side of this photograph as a point of reference. You can see what is now Honan Avenue along the base of the hill in back of the plant. Our house in the Benshoff Hill/Valley View section of Middle Taylor Township was at the top of the hill above the center of the photograph (north). Note the height (elevation) of the stacks as compared to the adjacent hillsides. Date of the photo is unknown, but it was probably in the late 1970’s as it looks like the plant is operational but not too active at this point. Vegetation is starting to regenerate on the hillsides. (Source of the photograph is unknown).</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is just an amazing vintage photograph showing specific details of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC) Rosedale coke plant. The photo appears to be from a vantage of looking west as it was taken from Prospect Route 271. You can see what is now Honan Avenue along the base of the hill in back of the plant. The “Knob” is the highest hill in the background to the left and you can actually see houses on top of the hill in the background to the right which is the Benshoff Hill/Valley View area of south Middle Taylor Township. Note the height (elevation) of the stacks as compared to the adjacent hillsides. Date of the photo is unknown but probably in the 1930’s or 1940’s. <image:caption>This is a picture taken from the same vantage point (looking west) as above but obviously it is much later in time. Notice the smokestacks and Honan Avenue are still the same; however, some of the hillside mining benches are gone and vegetation seems to be starting to return gradually. Notice too on this photograph, as compared to the above photograph, that you can now see the high mountain present well behind the location of where the “Knob” is. In the previous photograph you cannot see that mountain due to the presence of smog. <image:caption>In a stream valley, water from precipitation that is not runoff enters into those soils which are more permeable in the uplands and along slopes - such as Hydrologic Soil Group A and B soils - and by gravity the water works it’s way into the soils and into groundwater and downgradient surface water resources. Just a note here - Hydrologic Soil Groups are designations of soils as defined by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) in various publications such as Technical Release 55 (TR-55) and in most all County Soil Surveys. The four hydrologic soil groups (HSGs) are described as follows: Group A - soils in this group have low runoff potential when thoroughly wet. Water is transmitted freely through the soil and depth to the water table is greater than 24-inches. Group B - soils in this group have moderately low runoff potential when thoroughly wet. Water transmission through the soil is unimpeded. The depth to the water table is greater than 24-inches. Group C - soils in this group have moderately high runoff potential when thoroughly wet. Water transmission through the soil is somewhat restricted and depth to the water table is greater than 24-inches. Group D - soils in this group have high runoff potential when thoroughly wet. Water movement through the soil is restricted or very restricted and a water table may exist within 24-inches of the surface in this group, (Source: Chapter 630 Hydrology National Engineering Handbook, Chapter 7 Hydrologic Soil Groups)</image:caption>

See Update # 4 in the “Epilogue” section of the website for additional information and for his obituary. This photo is of him of me outside of the new St. Louis Cardinal Busch Memorial Stadium in 2006. It was the last series of the year against the Milwaukee Brewers and the Red Birds were fighting to make the playoffs. A news crew grabbed us as we were walking into the stadium.
